I’m pretty sure I’m late to the whole whipped coffee trend but I just found out a good portion of my friends and family never heard of this Dalgona coffee! So I realized not everyone is up to date with all the trends out there and thought it would be a good idea to share the recipe with you so you won’t miss out on all this goodness!

The main reason I was reluctant at first to post this whipped coffee is because I am kind of bored of this recipe. This is not new to me, I’ve been making this recipe for almost 30 years, this was in fact my very first coffee in my teen years. Back then whipped coffee was like the best treat for me and an excuse for me and my friends to gather and spend great time together! We loved whipping that coffee real good, watching it doubling, then tripling then quadrupling into a wonderful fluffy, airy, creamy brown cloud of goodness! We had a very hard time stopping ourselves from licking it straight from the teaspoon!

So this trendy recipe might be called Dalgona now but it’s nothing new under the sun, it’s been around for ages! But it’s making a comeback because it’s so crazy delicious, it’s ready in a blink of an eye and looks so fancy and elegant making it perfect to serve to guests. So something to keep in mind once we’re done with all this crazy crisis and we go back to throwing parties and barbecues and potlucks and all those magical social reunions filled with laughter, good food and booze!

Getting back to our whipped coffee, let’s get some questions covered, because this amazing drink is totally worth spending time digging through its origins, name, recipe and why some find it the best coffee on earth!

What is whipped coffee?

This is a coffee drink made with instant coffee, rubbed or whipped with granulated sugar and just a little bit of cold water until it’s at least four times larger in volume and fluffy, airy but creamy in texture. The more water and sugar you add the bigger the fluff but it takes from the intensity of the coffee.

Whipped coffee is mainly served over cold milk (with or without ice cubes) but could also be served with hot milk or cold/hot water.

What is Dalgona coffee?

Essentially, Dalgona coffee is whipped coffee! The name Dalgona comes from South Korea where an old fashion street snack, resembling whipped coffee, is name Dalgona.

What do you use to make whipped coffee?

You’ll need instant coffee, sugar and water. You absolutely need granulated sugar so no powdered sugar otherwise your coffee won’t stay fluffy. The granulated sugar can be white or brown.

You can also use sugar replacements as long as they’re granulated.

Can you make whipped coffee with regular coffee?

The short answer is no! You can’t make whipped coffee with regular coffee, simply because regular coffee is not soluble, it doesn’t melt when mixed and rubbed/whipped with sugar and water. You can use instant coffee, even caffeine free instant coffee would do and I hear hot chocolate powder too (never tried it though, it might be worth it).

Is whipped coffee good?

Well, that depends on what kind of person you are! Some people love it, some hate it and the main reason is, this kind of coffee, served over cold milk will never fully mix with the milk so you might need to eat the foam/froth with a teaspoon. Some people love to serve it this way and I’m one of them!

But if you’re not, you can always try the hot milk or water version, I guarantee you it’s just as delicious (not as refreshing though, the cold version is perfect for hot summer days while the hot one is great in cold seasons).

How long does it take to make whipped coffee?

It depends on the number of people you’re making this for. If it’s only for one person, making whipped coffee could take as little as 2-3 minutes, a little more if you want your coffee super whipped and airy.

If you’re making it for a large gathering, it might be worth using a hand mixer and the process could take even 15-20 minutes.

Can you refrigerate whipped coffee?

Yes! It keeps well in the fridge for up to 5 days (that’s the longest I kept it, you might want to experiment and try for additional time). Store it in a glass jar with a tight seal lid. Some liquid may form at the bottom but that’s fine. Just mix well for a few seconds right before use to reshape the froth.

How does whipped coffee taste?

The opinions vary but to me this coffee tastes like a combination of instant coffee and caramel toffee candy.

How to personalize your whipped coffee

I personally like this coffee simple and my favorite version is with hot water. I do like to make my whipped coffee a little denser though and to achieve that I simply add a little bit more sugar to the combination.

Here are other options to serve this coffee:

  • Over cold milk (with or without ice cubes)
  • With cold water (with or without milk)
  • Mixed with hot cocoa, as a topping
  • With syrup of choice for different flavors
  • Topped with instant coffee powder, cocoa powder or cinnamon powder
  • Topped with coffee biscuits, chocolate curls/shavings

I hope I convinced you this is like a miracle drink you really need to try! If I did (yay!), let me show you the simple steps to make your own! The ingredients listed are for 5 people. For each tablespoon of instant coffee add a tablespoon of sugar and a tablespoon of water.

Ingredients:

  • 5 tablespoons instant coffee of choice
  • 5 tablespoons of granulated sugar (add a little more if you want your whipped coffee more dense)
  • five tablespoons water (plus a little more)
  • 5 cups milk
  • ice cubes

Tools needed:

  • whisk, frother or hand mixer (I prefer a whisk, I have better control)
  • medium glass bowl
  • glasses
  • straws
  • latte spoons

Directions:

  • In a bowl, add the instant coffee and the sugar. Mix with the whisk to combine.
  • Add the water, one tablespoon at a time. Depending on the granulation of your sugar you might not need all the water or might need just a little more so keep an extra tablespoon of water on hand.
  • Start mixing with the whisk, pressing it against the wall of the bowl to break the sugar granules. The process of breaking the granules with a circular motion, while mixing with the water and instant coffee will create the froth.
  • Keep adding water whenever the mixture becomes too thick. You want it creamy and foamy but not too dense.
  • Keep mixing until all the sugar is melted and you can no longer feel any granules.
  • Add ice cubes to a glass, fill with milk 2/3 through the top then top the milk with whipped coffee.
  • Serve with a straw and a latte spoon.
