On a summer’s morning, when the sky is a clear, endless blue and the sun is already beating down to warm your skin, what makes a better breakfast than a sweet, refreshing frozen fruit smoothie bowl?

Nothing. That is the answer to that!

These fruity smoothie bowls are so refreshing and tasty, not to mention beautiful to look at. If you’ve been wondering how to make a smoothie with frozen fruit, the recipes below can be made either as smoothie bowls (with your choice of toppings), or as thick, creamy frozen fruit smoothies.

Smoothie Bowls vs Smoothies: What’s the Difference?

Below is my go-to smoothie bowl recipe. For a frozen fruit smoothie that you can drink through a straw rather than with a spoon, just add a little more liquid (whether that’s milk, water, or juice).

I find a smoothie bowl is a perfect breakfast option if you want something a little more filling than a smoothie: you can top your bowl with extra fruit, peanut butter for some healthy fats, and granola for a more balanced breakfast.

The best thing about these frozen fruit smoothie bowls? They’re so versatile. As you can see from these photos, my smoothie bowls rarely look the same.

I buy big bags of mixed frozen fruit, and always have a bag of ripe frozen bananas ready to go.

Sometimes I’ll add a scoop of vanilla vegan protein powder, sometimes cacao powder, or sometimes I’ll have some mango or passion fruit to hand to mix things up.

What’s The Best Way To Make A Smoothie Bowl with Frozen Fruit?

I make my smoothie bowls with my trusty NutriBullet, which many of my followers will know I use almost every day for one reason or another! When using frozen fruit for a smoothie bowl, you’ll get a super thick and creamy smoothie blend.

You may have to add a little more milk or water to get a smooth blend. More heavy-duty blenders such as the Vitamix 5200 will give you a really thick smoothie bowl with minimal liquid needed.

How To Make The Perfect Fruit Smoothie Bowl

For any smoothie bowl, I’ll always use at least one frozen banana and a splash of milk (plant-based or dairy depending on your dietary preferences). Even though I’m vegetarian, I actually prefer using almond or oat milk for my own fruit smoothie bowls.

The frozen banana is an essential addition to any frozen fruit smoothie bowl. It is an absolute game-changer for beautifully thick smoothie bowls – and although other frozen fruits will help add to the thickness of your bowl, nothing beats a banana.

Beyond that, it’s really down to your preferences. Add your ingredients to your blender and blitz until smooth and creamy, adding a splash more milk, water, or juice if needed until you reach the correct consistency.

Smoothie Bowl Ingredients

Here’s what I’ll typically use for a perfect frozen fruit smoothie bowl like you see pictured:

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 100ml plant-based milk
  • 100g frozen raspberries or mixed berries (which are often cheaper!)
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 1 tsp flaxseeds
  • 1 tsp peanut butter or almond butter

Depending on your portion size, this could make one or two smoothie bowls. Other great ingredients to potentially use in your frozen fruit smoothie bowl blend include:

  • Frozen blueberries
  • Frozen mango, pineapple, or kiwi
  • Coconut milk or cream
  • Orange juice instead of milk
  • Protein powder, either unflavored or your favorite flavor
  • Cacao powder for a chocolate smoothie bowl
